Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender Movie Review & Ending Explained | Why Aang's Story Still Matters

A spoiler-filled review, recap and ending explained, breaking down Aang's character arc, the film's stunning animation and the biggest moments from Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender

Finally, FINALLY, the Avatar: The Last Airbender animated film is out and it was worth the wait. The real wait, if you know what I mean (I’m talking to you if you who watched the leaked version, tsk, tsk).

Given all the less than excellent version we’ve had of adaptions (putting it mildly I know) from this incredible world, it was an absolute, delight, nay, a thrill, nay a delight and a thrill, to watch the next chapter of Ang’s story that felt real, true, familiar but also new.

The film was Directed by Lauren Montgomery and co-directed by Steve Ahn and William Mata. It is a continuation of the series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. The story concept and screenplay were by Kenneth Lin and Tim Hedrick along with Christopher Yost who also worked on the screenplay.

The film stars voice cast members Eric Nam as adult Aang, Jessica Matten as Katara, and Román Zaragoza as Sokka, all of them did a very believable job as adult versions of the characters, we all know so well.

My main take away from the film is that it felt so much like the season four that all of us Avatar fans wanted, and my main criticism was that at one hour and 39 minutes, it was way too short. If The Odyssey was almost three hours.

You may have noticed above that there is a video version of The Voice Note this week. It’s an experiment to see if having both audio and a visual element will help in enrich your experience (and perhaps mine too). It’s a bit more work but I’m happy to do it if I see a real interest and need for it. Again, great for you - options, options!

I have also written down my thoughts on the film, my live thoughts, as I was watching in: 104 Thoughts I Had While Watching Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender Movie. So you can read my stream of consciousness as I was experiencing the story or listen to me recap the film and deep dive into certain elements in this weeks episode. Options, options.

Enjoy!
